The numerous buildings, mentioned in written sources and partly excavated by J.T. Wood in the temenos, allow the supposition of an extensive and densely developed area, yet its appearance is largely unknown. In order to visualise the topography of the sanctuary, on the one hand a meticulous reprocessing of the existing archaeological documentation, and on the other hand the preparation of a space-time based in-depth model created on the basis of geo-archaeological data is required. Central questions concern the extent of the sacred temenos and its boundary to city and hinterland. As with the alteration of the coastline, the relocation of the city required a new definition of the boundary between holy precinct and settlement area.

Another important research question is the development, organisation and infrastructure of the sanctuary itself. In the territory, well defined by means of boundary stones, agricultural production sites, fishing grounds and storage sites for valuable raw materials such as marble, metals, alum or corundum were located. By means of geomorphological investigations in combination with already existing pollen data, conclusions will be possible regarding the appearance of the landscape and land usage, and therefore also regarding the economic foundations of the operation of the sanctuary.

Ultimately, development, infrastructure and organisation of the Artemision should also be investigated against the background of the actors involved in it. An additional important aspect concerns the hierarchy of the administration of the sanctuary, both with reference to the individuals involved as well as to the functionality of the buildings. The question of the 'Gender of Space' should also be pursued, which is presumably also reflected in the accessibility of various areas within the temenos; with the female patron goddess of the Artemision, areas specifically for women were probably also allotted.

Until now the Late Antique usage of the area of the temenos and territorium after the end of paganism are completely unknown, and to this end a special thematic emphasis will be established.
