| The two coups d’État that brought to power (or back to power) the two Pahlavi leaders (in 1921 and 1953) share obvious similarities which were not always pointed out by historians: both met with a successful outcome in a context of fear, and both secretly benefited from the support of a foreign power. In our quest for documentary evidence, we are in both cases confronted to a lack of primary documents and to contradictory reports. In Iran, nationalist historiography was always eager to incriminate one naughty Foreign Service or another. Upon closer examination, however, some contradictions can be attested among the sources.
