Miguel Gallego: Quantum Theory at the Macroscopic Scale

The main goal of this project is to challenge the usual belief, supported by the mechanisms os decoherence and coarse-graining, that quantum effects are suppresed in the macroscopic limit. In particular, we will consider macroscopic systems, i.e. systems with a large number of degrees of freedom or a large number of particles, in realistic situations subject to noise and imperfections. Our aim is to investigate the possibility of preserving the full mathematical structure of quantum theory in the macroscopic limit, even in the presence of decoherence, coarse-graining and losses.
