Judeo-Spanish

The VLACH Commission in collaboration with the Institute for Romance Studies of the University of Vienna has committed to support the documentation of some of the Judeo-Spanish varieties in Istanbul, Greece and Northern Morocco. Although none of the Judeo-Spanish varieties enjoy official status in any country, it has been acknowledged as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, France and Turkey. The following activities and measures have been and will be carried out during the first activity period of the VLACH Commission (2016-2021):

  • field research on Judeo-Spanish in Istanbul, a highly endangered variety, conducted by Ioana Aminian in collaboration with Deyvi Papo (2014-2017)
  • field research on Haketia variety in Tetouan and Ceuta, a variety which has been declared extinct as a spoken vernacular, conducted by Ioana Aminian in collaboration with Deyvi Papo (2017)
  • annotation and editing of research materials: incorporation of the audio, photo and video collection provided by Ioana Aminian, collected 2014-2017 in Istanbul and the Princes' islands
  • annotation and editing of research materials: incorporation of the audio, photo and video collection provided by Ioana Aminian, collected 2017 in Tetouan and Ceuta
  • production of video clips from the named collections for a broader public, including transcriptions, translations into English and scientific descriptions by Ioana Aminian in cooperation with Deyvi Papo and Imane Sghiouar
  • publication and popularization of photo collection and video clips within the VLACH Judeo-Spanish collection until 2021
  • dissemination of field research results at international conferences
