Structural embedding of the KKL

KKL and its scientists are well connected in all national and international frameworks. They take advantage of relevant research infrastructures (such as the Sonnblick Observatory) and collaborate with institutions inside the Academy of Sciences with stakes in climate research, such as the Commission of Interdisciplinary Ecological Studies (KIÖS), the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research (IGF) or the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC). Joint activities beyond the Academy – e.g. with the Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA), on issues such as the societal transformation required to manage the demands of greenhouse gas mitigation – and with all the institutions represented by KKL’s members prove its central position in Austrian climate science. Most importantly, the Austrian Academy of Sciences itself provides the key structure by supporting the activities of its volunteer members logistically (via a secretariat, meeting rooms and support, web space) as well as in its outreach (e.g. by the Public Relations Office of the Academy, or the Academy of Sciences Press) and by lending its reputation to foster the highest scientific standards in the commission’s work.
