Progress in Gaurishankar Conservation Area

From Monitoring to Carbon Offsetting

More than two years ago, central Nepal was hit by a massive 7.8 Mw earthquake, also knownas the Gorkha Earthquake. The tremor, although expected to occur in this region from timeto time, hit an international research expedition en route to their research area, located inthe Tamakoshi river valley, close to the Tibetian border. While this event marked the suddenend of the ongoing project, it served as a basic consideration for further activities. With thisworkshop, we aim to present the faithful transistion from the Gaurishankar monitoringproject to the BOKU Carbon Offsetting Project. We aim to provide a holistic view on thisregion, based on research within this framework and from external expertise and discusspotential pathways of further science-based interventions that contribute to a sustainabledevelopment in the context of the devastating earthquake.
