CUTE: Mission and Data Simulator

Ein Vortrag von Sreejith Aickara Gopinathan (IWF/ÖAW) im Rahmen der IWF-Seminarreihe Herbst/Winter 2018/19

The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) is a 6U CubeSat and it is planned for launch in the second quarter of 2020. CUTE is equipped with a near UV spectrograph with a resolution of the order of 3000 in the wavelength range of 2500-3300 Å. CUTE will carry out low-resolution spectroscopy of the critical atmospheric tracers (e.g., FeII, MgII, MgI, MnII) that are inaccessible from the ground enabling us to further understand atmospheric escape and associated phenomena in exoplanets. CUTE's results are of great importance as it will be the only UV spectroscopy instrument observing other than HST in the coming years.

I will present the CUTE mission with emphasis on its instrumental side and the CUTE data simulator developed to evaluate the performance of CUTE and the mission planing. The simulator has been developed considering also scalability and adaptability to other missions carrying on-board a long-slit spectrograph. The data simulator will be used to inform the CUTE target selection, choose the spacecraft and instrument settings for each observation, and construct synthetic data in preparation for the data reduction pipeline.
