The study describes technology assessment in Austria and presents strategies for its future conception.
It provides a survey of institutions carrying out TA or TA-like activities as well as those within Austria's socio-political system with TA-equivalent functions. The technology assessment activities in other countries were analysed by way of comparison. Two points are clear in this respect: the financing of technology assessment in Austria is extremely modest on an international scale, even with allowance for the size of the country. In addition, there is no definition of the institutional status or the role of technical assessment. This is all the more regrettable since the study shows that around one fifth of Austrian laws concern aspects that should be subject to prior TA analysis.
