Georg Aichholzer

Georg Aichholzer has a PhD in sociology and years of research experience in the field of technology assessment. His main research interest addresses issues of the development towards an information and network society, in particular the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in major fields, their societal impacts and related policy measures.

Education

Georg Aichholzer studied sociology and economics at the University of Vienna. After receiving his diploma in sociology (1975) he was a post-graduate student at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) in Vienna from 1976 to 1978. In 1979 he received his PhD (Dr. rer. soc. oec.) at the University of Vienna with a thesis on the decision structures and scientific performance of research units in the fields of science and technology.

Experience

From 1979 to 1992 Georg Aichholzer was a research and teaching assistant at the Department of Sociology of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) in Vienna specialising in organisational and industrial sociology and the sociology of technology. Since 1984 he has continuously held university teaching assignments (up to 1993 at the University of Vienna; 1991 at the University of Klagenfurt; since 1992, regularly at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration). In 1993 he spent a period of research at the International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, supported by a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. In March 1993 he joined the Technology Assessment Unit (TAU) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which became the Institute of Technology Assessment (ITA) in 1994. Since then he has been working as a senior scientist and project director at ITA.

His current research focus with empirical studies mainly from an international comparative perspective is in the area of the information society, specifically electronic governance (e-governance), i.e. topics such as e-government, e-public services, e-identity management systems, e-participation and e‑democracy, digital transformation of business (smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0).

Georg Aichholzer's publication record includes numerous journal and book articles, and seven books as co-editor and co-author, respectively, e.g. more recently on "Electronic Democracy in Europe", "Evaluating e-Participation" and "Technology Governance".
