Towards a New Social History of 19th- and Early 20th-Century Central Asia
Summer School, organized by Paolo Sartori and Thomas Welsford
Funded by VolkswagenStiftung, in cooperation with Martin-Luther-Universität Halle/Wittenberg
Institut für Iranistik, Apostelgasse 23, 1030 Wien, Seminarraum 2

In September 2012 the Institute for Iranian Studies in Vienna will host a week-long international workshop, dedicated to the social history of 19th- and early 20th-century Central Asia. Organised as part of a VolkswagenStiftung-funded collaborative research project – the aim of which is to offer some new perspectives on this under-studied historical field by exploring the contents of the Uzbek state archive – the workshop will offer an opportunity for scholars from around the world to meet and discuss some of their lines of enquiry. In particular, we conceive of the workshop as an opportunity for scholars from Central Asia to hone their lines of research through open-ended discussion with a mutually supportive circle of international peers. The workshop will take place over the course of five days, from Monday September 3 to Friday September 7. Each day will be split into three or four sessions, with a mixture of text classes, seminar papers and graduate student presentations.

The welcome address and the keynote (open to the public) will be held on:
Monday, September 3rd, 4:00 pm, at the main building of the Austrian Academy of Sciences: Sitzungssaal, Dr.-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz 2, 1010 Wien

Welcome address: Paolo Sartori, Jürgen Paul
Keynote: Florian Schwarz, "Families and Land in Central Asia"
