Shervin Farridnejad studied Ancient and Middle Iranian Studies and Zoroastrianism in which he received his PhD in 2014 with a thesis entitled “The Language of Images: A Study on Iconographic Exegesis of the Anthropomorphic Divine Images in Zoroastrianism” (forthcoming in Iranica/Harrassowitz) from the Institute of the Iranian Studies, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.
His main research interest is the literature and rituals as well as the cultural and religious history of Zoroastrianism from antiquity to the present. His current research interests include the rituals and their iconography, connections and exchanges between the ancient, early modern and contemporary Zoroastrian rituals and practices, the history of late antique Zoroastrianism, as well as the transmission of knowledge in the broader context of the Ancient Near East. He is a Topoi associate fellow with a project on “Religious Authority in Zoroastrianism and the Question of Succession: Textual Authority versus Priestly Authority” ( and the research fellow of the Institute of Iranian Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin (

His research at the Institute of Iranian studies as part of his habilitation’s project focuses also on Zoroastrian religious literature in Classical New Persian and Gujarati and aims to build up a digital archive for all corresponding manuscripts as well as providing a critical study of their genesis, formation, continuity and content.
