Rüdiger Scholz (Freiburg): Der Tod des Heinrich Faust und die Forschung

If we portray Goethe‘s Faust as a man of guilt and failure, it becomes difficult to explain his salva-tion. Goethe believed that the soul continued into eternal life due to its power and achievements in this life. Therefore, a negative assessment alone cannot be correct. The interplay between the immanent and supernatural realms, the spheres of men and women, and the dichotomy between heterosexuality (Faust) and homosexuality (Mephistopheles) demonstrate that the autonomy of the great man is limited. Faust‘s violent acts and enormous productivity are consequences of his unstable psyche.
