Heike Klapdor (Berlin): Der Brief als Akteur. Zu zwei Brieferzählungen aus dem Exil von
Anna Seghers: ›Post ins Gelobte Land‹ (1945) und Kathrine Kressmann Taylor: ›Adressat unbekannt‹ (1938)

Through differentiated methodological reflections on theories of letter research and exile research, actor-network theory, and Peter von Matt‘s theory of intrigue, this academic essay reads the letter narratives of Anna Seghers, ›Post ins Gelobte Land‹ (1945), and Kathrine Kressmann Taylor, ›Address Unknown‹ (1938) as literary realisations of powerlessness turned into power. The literary practice of letter writing is an empowerment fantasy. And an experiment. With the character of the letter, she establishes a subject that acts independently alongside the fictional author of the letter, extending its power to act to the existential limits of life and death.
