Based on Hofmannsthal‘s comparison of poetry to seismography, this essay examines the global dimensions in the lecture ›The Poet and This Time‹ (1906), focusing on the earthquakes of San Francisco in 1906 and Ljubljana in 1895. This turn to the global is a reaction to the precarious situation in the face of growing nationalism and anti-Semitism in Vienna, similar to the formation of Eduard Suess‘s modern geological perspective, which is global.

Ausgehend von Hofmannsthals Vergleich von Dichtung und Seismografie untersucht dieser Aufsatz globale Dimensionen im poetologischen Vortrag ›Der Dichter und diese Zeit‹ (1906) mit Fokus auf die Erdbeben von San Francisco 1906 und Laibach 1895. Diese Hinwendung zum Globalen wird als Reaktion auf die prekäre Situation angesichts des wachsenden Nationalismus und Antisemitismus in Wien betrachtet und in Zusammenhang mit der globalen Perspektive in der modernen Geologie durch Eduard Suess gestellt.
