The theory of action and its critique by advocates of non-action and Prabhākara
Abstract
The Bhāvanāviveka, “The Analysis of Bhāvanā,” is the earliest extant work of Maṇḍana Miśra (c. 660–720), offering a sophisticated inquiry into the nature of action. The objective of the workshop is to finalize a critical edition and translation of the first chapter (Pūrvapakṣa) of the Bhāvanāviveka, based on Saito’s collation of the mūla text as well her draft translation, and Stern’s collation of Uṃveka’s ṭīkā.
We commence from stanza 17, which initiates the discussion on the nature of movement (parispanda), presenting a robust argument by a scholar who contends that action can be reduced to conjunction and disjunction. This argument subsequently transitions into the niyoga theory, marking Maṇḍana’s first reference to Prabhākara, which concludes the chapter.
The reading sessions are held on weekdays at the institute; however, from the 20th to the 23rd, we will conduct an intensive reading session over the weekend.
The text and provisional translation are shared with interested participants. To obtain these, please contact Akane Saito (akane.saito(at)oeaw.ac.at).
