Religious institutions and religious specialists in medieval and early modern Japan
Abstract
This workshop will concentrate on the institutional developments in the realms of Shinto and Buddhism that occurred concurrently with the recentralization of the state under the Tokugawa dynasty. The impact of this new political context will be examined through an analysis of developments in particular religious centers or regions from the 15th to the 19th century. The workshop is related to the project “Hanryō shintō: Regional Shinto reforms in early modern Japan,” which has been conducted at the IKGA between 2020 and 2024.
