A lamp for Chan: the Bsam gtan mig sgron reading workshop

International source reading workshop with Allan Ding (DePaul University, Chicago)

The Lamp of Meditation for the Eye (Bsam gtan mig sgron), composed by Nubchen Sanggye Yeshe (b. 844?), is a Tibetan doxographical work that integrates early Tibetan sources. The main purpose of this text is to present a doctrinal analysis of four distinct meditative approaches. In this workshop, participants will engage in a close reading of selected Chan-related passages, focusing on two key aspects: how the text incorporates Chan sources and how it structures its arguments.

Yi (Allan) Ding is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at DePaul University, specializing in Dunhuang Studies, Sino-Tibetan Buddhism, and Buddhist rituals. His forthcoming book, Observances, Feasts, and Scripts: The Varieties of Zhai in Chinese Buddhism from the Second to the Tenth Century, is slated for publication in 2025. Currently, he is engaged in a comparative study of Moheyan's Chan treatise titled Dasheng dunwu zhengli jue.
