Lecture for Ukrainian Students by Valentyna Mokina at the Simons Science School in Chemistry and Physics

On 13th September, Dr. Valentyna Mokina, scientist of the Institut of High Energy Physics (HEPHY) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, engaged the students in a captivating session about the ÖAW institute and the cutting-edge research being conducted at HEPHY. She provided an in-depth look into her primary field of study, dark matter searches, guiding the students through the complexities of rare event searches.

The students were also given the unique opportunity to explore real-world scientific tools. They observed detectors and scintillation crystals used in dark matter research, and through the use of VR glasses, they virtually stepped inside the Belle detector—a truly immersive experience in modern physics.

This inspiring interaction left the students with a deeper understanding of advanced scientific concepts and a glimpse into the exciting possibilities of a research-driven career in physics.

The Simons Science School in Chemistry and Physics is a one-week program designed for Ukrainian high school students who have demonstrated excellence in science competitions. This initiative aims to nurture their passion for science, introduce them to potential research careers, and inspire them to apply their skills towards shaping the future of Ukraine.
