Biography
Univ-Prof Dr Ernst Karner is the Director of both ETL and the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law (ECTIL), as well as a full Professor of Civil Law at the University of Vienna. Born in 1969, he studied law in Vienna (Dr jur 1997 with distinction) and completed his habilitation in 2004 with a thesis on bona fide acquisition. He has served as a member of the Commission for the Reform of Austrian Tort Law, established by the Ministry of Justice and the European Commission’s Expert Group on Liability and New Technologies. As well as being a member of the European Group on Tort Law (EGTL) and a fellow of the European Law Institute (ELI), Karner is also a member of the Executive Committee of the World Tort Law Society (WTLS), a visiting professor at Yantai University, China, and a co-editor of the Journal of European Tort Law (JETL). He has written extensively on Austrian and European tort law and has received several awards (Figdor-Preis der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften für Rechts-, Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften 1997; Walther Kastner-Preis 2005; Kardinal‐Innitzer‐Förderungspreis 2005; Brandl/Talos – Intersectional Legal Studies Award 2008; ÖVFA‐Kapitalmarktpreis 2010). Furthermore, he has given lectures in Austria, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, Israel, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan and the U.S.A.
