ABSTRACT

What is the relationship between theatre and the twenty-first century city? What impact do late capitalist urban transformations have on theatre? And how do theatres themselves shape and participate in such urban environments? These are the questions that sit at the heart of “Theatre and Gentrification in the European City”, a multi-year research project funded by the European Research Council. Since starting our project in September 2023, we have approached these questions by way of a multi-sited lens, as well as a specific dimension of contemporary urban transformation: gentrification. In this article, we present the transcript of an international roundtable conversation featuring five artists whose work directly engages our questions, including Anna Rochowska (Warsaw), Charlotte Lagrange (Paris), Chris Bush (London), Florian Loycke (Berlin), and Yeşim Özsoy (Istanbul).
