One reception after the other: Gezo of Tortona, Rather of Verona and the uses of Carolingian learning in tenth-century northern Italy

How were Carolingian texts read and utilised in the post-Carolingian world? This paper examines this general question through a remarkable body of evidence that, although long known, has only partially been explored. It focuses on two ecclesiastics active in northern Italy around the mid-tenth century, Rather of Verona and his less well known younger contemporary Gezo of Tortona; more specifically, it deals with their overlapping encounters with Paschasius Radbertus' De corpore et sanguine Domini, as preserved in Vat.lat. 5767, a ninth-century copy produced in Bobbio. In setting out the responses of these readers to Radbert's text, this paper considers how ideas about the eucharist can be situated within current debates about continuity and change between the ninth and later eleventh centuries.
