Peter of Poitiers' (d. 1205) Compendium historiae: The Invention of the Timeline and its Digital Edition

While diagrammatic renderings of history in the form of a "timeline" are commonplace today, this was not always the case. The first of such diagrammatic renderings was the Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi, a work conceived by Peter of Poitiers in the late twelfth century. Immediately successful and popular throughout the Middle Ages, the Compendium historiae proved to be a turning point in the history of visualization. After introducing the work, we will present the first critical edition of the Compendium historiae: a digital, visual edition that provides access to the work in its many dimensions.
