Research Group »Military Infrastructure and Transport Routes«

Following in the steps of ancient strategies, Roman infrastructure measures are being explored under the aspect of state-preserving necessity, military efficiency, and the promotion of economic growth in Italy as well as in the northern provinces (Gallia Aquitania, Noricum, Pannonia Superior). The display of reciprocal effects of civil and military interests and its visibility in the archaeological record is being documented and analyzed through the use of a variety of methods (survey, geophysical survey, coring, small excavations, LiDAR and GIS data processing, material study) at select find sites; the new results are discussed in supraregional comparative studies.
