This research group mainly deals with the aspects of ancient religion that can be explored through archaeological contexts and the associated artifacts and biofacts. Written source are consulted for interpretations whenever they are present. The aim is to reconstruct the cult activities and to document the function of the individual buildings and areas within the sacred district.
Through the juxtaposition of evidence for cult from different time periods (early Iron Age to the Middle Ages) consistent and variable elements of religion and rites are identified and analyzed. A further focus is placed on the reuse of pagan sanctuaries in the Middle Ages.
Geographically the projects are focused on the Aegean.
