Austrian-Hungarian Fortresses in Montenegro

Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between Montenegro and Austria officially signed

On June 14, 2018 the memorandum of understanding between the Montenegrin Ministry of Culture and the OeAI was signed by the minister of culture Aleksandar Bogdanović and OeAI-Director Sabine Ladstätter in Cetinje/Montenegro. The Austrian ambassador Anna Jankovic was also present.

»We are confident, that the memorandum signed today represents a good basis for the implementation of projects that will lead to the improvement of the state of the cultural heritage but will also contribute to an increased mobility of the Montenegrin and Austrian experts in the cultural heritage sector. Strengthening the cooperation in this area is of great importance particularly since Austria has a long tradition in the area of the protection and conservation of cultural heritage and because the Austrian-Hungarian fortresses in Montenegro represent an important part of the cultural heritage. I emphasize this because a large number of the k.u.k.-fortresses are located in attractive tourist locations and therefore are well suited for the development of cultural tourism.« - according to Minister Bogdanovic.

Ms. Ladstätter was particularly satisfied with the possibility of studying the Austrian-Hungarian fortresses in Montenegro in collaboration with the Montenegrin Ministry of Culture. »This a great opportunity for my institution and especially its department for Cultural Heritage.«

»This project is further evidence of our desire to strengthen the cultural cooperation with Montenegro.« Ambassador Jankovic emphasized following the signing of the memorandum.

The aim of the memorandum is a closer cooperation between the cultural institutions of Montenegro and Austria and the implementation of joint projects in the area of protection and conservation of immovable cultural heritage. A particular focus is placed on the study of the Austrian-Hungarian fortresses in Montenegro. Due to the position of the Austrian Archaeological Institute as an extraordinary research institute of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research and as part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the planned collaboration for the education and further training of professionals in the field of the protection and conservation of cultural heritage is of particular importance.

The memorandum provides for cooperation in the implementation of international projects and joint applications for European and international funding of cultural heritage as well as cooperation in the digitization of the technical, professional, and scientific documentation of the cultural heritage. Furthermore, collaboration in the area of archaeological and conservational research is also planned as well as the implementation of conservation projects with appropriate conservation measures in accordance with the national and international standards.

One of the first planned activities encompasses the visit of Austrian experts and students from the field of architecture who along with representatives of the Montenegrin culture authorities will study the fortresses of Goražde and Kosmač.
