From May 10-13, 2023 the international workshop »Ex Marmore: Exploitation, trade and use of white marbles in Ancient Thrace and its neighbourhood« took place in Stara Zagora (Bulgaria). It was organised by National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Austrian Archaeological Institute at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
The workshop focused on different aspects of marble in seven sessions, such as geology and quarries, quarries and archaeological landscape or marble and urbanism. The team of the OeAI presented preliminary results of the project »Fingerprinting White Marbles. Quarries and Cities of Roman Thrace, 1st–3rd century AD« (OFWF033042). The Bulgarian colleagues gave papers on various subjects related to the topic. A lot of fruitful discussions developed among the approx. 45 participants during the workshop. The event was combined with visits of archaeological sites and museums in Sofia, Stara Zagora and Plovdiv.
