The library currently holds around 20,000 volumes, the main focus of which is on the archaeology and history of Greece from prehistory to late antiquity. With the exception of a number of older book collections dating back to its beginnings in the early 20th century, the library reflects in particular the research themes of topography, architecture and pottery that are represented at the Institute. The Institute endeavours to make the collections of Austrian publications on Greek antiquity and Byzantine history as as complete as possible accessible to the Athenian professional public.

The holdings are registered in the online catalogue of the Vienna University Library and marked with the code »ÖAI/Bibliothek Athen ÖAW« along with the location information.
