Burial sites are platforms where numerous socio-cultural aspects such as socio-economic status, identity, ethnic affiliation, religious beliefs or cosmology of a community or of an individual is expressed. The biological remains of the dead also provide information about diet and living conditions. As a result burials are some of the most important sources available for archaeological research and the reconstruction of the past. The OeAI is home to a range of interdisciplinary research projects in which burials and their contents are studied as a source for socio-cultural identity in life and in death but also – supplemented by bioarchaeological studies – as an intersection between biology and culture.
