The work group carries out a variety of nationally and internationally networked, interdisciplinary projects, which focus on the study of the early Christian, i.e. late antique and early Byzantine culture and art, with special attention paid to religious-, ecclesiastical- and cult- historical aspects. The Austrian Academy of Sciences can look back on a long tradition of research, particularly in this field. After initially concentrating on eastern and southeastern Europe and the Black Sea region, its focus has gradually expanded over the last fifteen years to incorporate the Mediterranean region.
