Danuta Shanzer was born in Manhattan, New York City, in 1956. She studied Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr College (B.A. 1977) and Literae Humaniores at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University (D.Phil. 1981). She has taught at the University of Manchester (1980-81), at the Univ. of California at Berkeley (1981-1990), at Harvard University (1989), at Cornell University (1989-2003), and at the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2003-2011), before taking up an appointment as Univ.-Prof. für lateinische Philologie der Spätantike und des Mittelalters at the University of Vienna (2011-).
She is the author of A Philosophical and Literary Commentary on Martianus Capella’s De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii Liber 1 (Berkeley 1986) and of Letters and Selected Prose of Avitus of Vienne (co-authored with IanWood, University of Leeds, Liverpool 2002) as well as numerous articles. She is the editor of 4 books, the most recent being The Battle of Vouillé 507 CE: Where France Began (De Gruyter, 2012), co-edited with R.W. Mathisen. She has many varied scholarly editorial functions, including the editorship of the Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library, Latin Series (Harvard University Press) and the editorial board of the CSEL (Univ. Salzburg). She has held Fellowships from the Marshall Aid Commission, the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, and the ACLS. She is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America.
Her research focuses on the literary history, Latin philology, and social and religious history of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Her own peregrinations have made her increasingly conscious of, interested in, the history and historiography of scholars and scholarship in the early modern and modern periods.
