Reflections on the Ecology of Landscapes

This volume comprises summaries of lectures presented at the festive symposium "Land Use Ecology", organized at the occasion of the 80th birthday of Professor Gerhard Glatzel, former chair of KIÖS.

Land use is a key driver of ecosystem degradation and the loss of biodiversity in specific. Humanity depends on functional ecosystems to produce essential goods, like food and clean water, for instance. Consequently we shape our environment ever since with rising impacts. The understanding of drivers and effects is a key challenge that includes effects of climate change, biophysical impacts such as acid deposition and the recovery of affected ecosystems, societal components and the question of equality in resource distribution. The aim of the volume is to highlight the multidimenstionality of land-use associated challenges and the resulting need of interdisciplinary approaches to find sustainable solutions.
