About

Anja Bauer is a political scientist researching and teaching in the areas of environmental, sustainability and technology governance with a special interest in the role of expertise, anticipation and participation in policy-making. In her current research she focuses on societal engagement in the context of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and the practices and paradigms of policy advice in technology assessment.

Education

Anja Bauer studied political science, economics and sociology in Mainz, Siena and Potsdam. In 2003 she graduated from the University of Potsdam with the master thesis “equity considerations in international environmental politics”. In 2015 she completed the doctoral program in social and economic sciences at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). In her doctoral thesis she analyzed anticipatory policy advice in Strategic Environmental Assessment, Technology Assessment and Foresight.

Experience

From 2002-2004 Anja Bauer gained first research experiences at the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research (PIK). From 2004-2016 she worked at the Institute of Forest, Environmental, and Natural Resource Policy (InFER) of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) on a variety of issues, including forest and rural development policies, sustainability and innovation, technology governance, and climate policy. A main focus of her research and teaching has been on the role of science and expertise in environmental policy and planning, the governance of climate change adaptation and anticipatory policy advice for sustainable development.

In June 2015 Anja Bauer joined the Institute of Technology Assessment in the area governance of controversial technologies.
