Providing environmental protection represents a horizontal issue over all industrial sectors. The institutionalisation of research and development in this area as well as an internationally efficient marketing for providing environmental technologies are still lacking. The European Environmental Action Plan (ETAP) was an initiative of the EU commission to further environmental technologies.
ETAP aimed to improve the institutionalised R&D for environmental technologies in the fields such as hydrogen technologies and fuel cells, photovoltaic as well as water treatment. Key activities of ETAP were the improvement of information exchange of stakeholders as technology developers, investors, administration and so on. The European panel on environmental technologies should improve the harmonization of R&D and marketing of environmental technologies and support the standardisation of process plants and product profiles to accelerate the introduction of innovative technologies to the market.
To support the implementation activities of ETAP in Austria the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management has established an expert group for environmental technologies in October 2004. The Institute of Technology Assessment ITA/ÖAW is commissioned by the Ministry to coordinate and moderate the meetings of this expert group.
The start meeting of experts from research and administration has taken place on the 18th October 2004 in Vienna.
