The portrait of Kissilerobo: from ethnographic field recording to Hamitic "race" icon

Peter ROHRBACHER

The photographic image at the center of this paper depicts the local ruler Kissilerobo from Mpororo in German East Africa, located in what is now the border region of Rwanda and Uganda. The striking profile shot corresponded to an ideal image of the male Hamite as described in numerous anthropological works and travelogues of the time. The colonial photograph advanced to become a "racial" icon of the Hamites and also served as a model for sculptural realization. Bronze and plaster casts of Kissilerobo were presented in exhibitions in Chicago, Dresden and in Vienna. The article is part of the exhibition catalog, the exhibition at the Bonartes Institute, Vienna runs from 30.07.2021 to 29.10.2021..
