Trieste in the First World War

The project 'Trieste in the First World War’ will research the fate of the biggest Cisleithanian port in the global conflict of 1914–18. The main goal is to gain insight into how the authorities dealt with the conflict between the nationalities in Trieste: at the beginning of the twentieth century, the city was a flourishing port marked by tensions between the Italian home population and Slovenes migrating to the town for economic reasons who had already formed a national consciousness. During the First World War, the authorities suppressed all national trends, leading to repressive measures (for example, internment) against real and suspected nationalists.
