The ‘Biography Portal’ was founded in 2007–8, not least due to an initiative by the Austrian Biographical Encyclopaedia. The Portal enables access to a joint online directory of all participant European biographical encyclopaedias free of charge. It is linked to the relevant online biographies and internet resources, is networked with relevant standard data (GND, VIAF) and at the same time operates as a specialist portal for people with an interest in biographies (to date mainly in the German-speaking countries).
Founding partners besides the Austrian Biographical Encyclopedia:
- Die Neue Deutsche Biographie/NDB (Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences)
- Das Historische Lexikon der Schweiz (HLS Foundation)
- Das Münchener Digitalisierungszentrum (Bavarian State Library/BSB)
In future, the Portal will be expanded to include further national biographical encyclopaedias, as well as smaller 'regional' encyclopaedic initiatives, mainly in the German-speaking countries. To date, the following databases and their biographical entries have been incorporated:
‘Rheinland-Pfälzische Personendatenbank’, ‘Sächsische Biografie’, ‘Österreichisches Musiklexikon’, as well as ‘Biographisches Lexikon zur Geschichte Südosteuropas’ and ‘Slovenska biografija’.
