320 Years of Byzantine Studies in Vienna

A celebratory event on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Johannes Koder, Otto Kresten, Werner Seibt and Erich Trapp

In 1962, the Department for Byzantine Studies (and later also Modern Greek Studies) at the University of Vienna was founded with the appointment of Herbert Hunger (1914-2000) as full professor. The first generation of his students included Johannes Koder, Otto Kresten, Werner Seibt and Erich Trapp, who subsequently developed the subject at the university and at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in its various aspects and established the world reputation of the "Vienna School" of Byzantine Studies. They passed on their knowledge to many students in Austria and abroad for decades. Between June 2022 and January 2023, these four scholars celebrate their 80th birthday. On this occasion, the Department for Byzantine Research of the Institute for Medieval Research of the Austrian Academy honors them with an celebratory event that recognizes their importance as researchers and academic teachers.
