SPRACHKUNST. A journal for literary studies

The word Sprachkunst, which translates as ‘the art of language’, sums up the approach taken by the articles in this journal for literary studies. One tradition in philology has concentrated on the different forms taken by the artistic use of language and on poetological themes. Today’s journal is based on a recognition that this tradition can be combined with contemporary paradigms in modern literary studies in productive ways, focusing on the text itself to analyse critical self-understanding within literatures.

The main focus of the journal, which has been published twice-yearly since 1970 by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, is on German-language and European literatures. Articles may be published in German, English or French. They are subject to international peer review and are listed in Crossref and ERIHplus, among others. As well as essays in literary studies, the journal also includes reviews of specialist literature and lists of PhD and post-doctoral theses in the study of literature submitted at Austrian universities.
