Social Anthropology and Culture Studies at Viennese Schools
The project is based in three Viennese schools, the Islamic RG Vienna 15, BRGORG 15 Henriettenplatz and GRG 10 Ettenreichgasse, and is implemented with students of the 6th and 7th grade. Applying methods of social anthropology and culture studies, it will focus on Austrian Muslims’ manifold ways of living, how they practice or don’t practice Islam as part of their social and cultural life. It will investigate how Muslim and non-Muslim students live together in intercultural settings within and outside school.
In interreligious discourse, cultural differences will be negotiated, which the students perceive within the Austrian society as well as between this environment and the regions of their families’ origin. By engaging the Muslim and non-Muslim students in the research and development of the project, their capacities of cultural translation are presented and elaborated.
The students are engaged both as researchers and as subject of research.
The project will be documented by video recordings. These recordings will serve the scientific analysis and evaluation of the project. They will enable the pedagogically designed publication on a webpage, while the presentation at the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art will reach out to the wider public.
