Taking as its starting point older forms of solidarity the project develops the thesis that a translation of these concepts is necessary to develop new forms of social cohesion for contemporary democracies.

Empirically, the project focuses on transnational social movements based on solidarity while, at the same time, producing solidarity. A universal solidarity and a solidarity practiced in common struggles. Translations to new forms of solidarity require the circulation of situated knowledge and different experiences. Context dependence and power imbalances have to be constantly reflected. Solidarity is understood as a continuous process of translation – from the universal to the concrete and vice versa, from experiences to political agency, from old boundaries to new relations of common desire.
