Between Back Province and Metropolis

Actor Autobiographies as Sites for Negotiating Cultural Identities

The aim of the project is to analyse the autobiographies of actors and actresses as sites for negotiating their cultural identities as artists. Our main thesis is that these autobiographies have to be considered as performative practices in which their authors also contributed to the construction of the German-speaking part of the theatre landscape of the Habsburg Monarchy. Thus the autobiographies are not considered as sources for ‘facts’ for theatre history but as text for the interpretation of individual history and collective experience.
