The Integration of the European Second Generation

The Marie Curie Research and Training Network TIES is based on the long-term international and interdisciplinary research network TIES, acronym for “The Integration of the European Second Generation”. TIES is a research project on the situation of the adult descendants of immigrants from Turkey, the former Yugoslavia and Morocco, who were born and grew up in one of eight European countries, and thus to whom the term ‘second generation’ can be applied. The project focuses on processes of translation which are colloquially called ‘integration’, analyzing the economic and social situation as well as education and ‘sense of belonging’ of the members of this second generation.

The aim of the international project TIES is to establish the first comparative data-base on the second generation which permits analysis of the lives of young adults from both minority and majority groups sharing the same neighbourhoods in major European cities.

Hatten wir nicht – so in etwa: It is the hope of this research team that …? The material compiled in this data-base can further be used as a basis for policy development.

As the young adults of this ‘second generation’ went through the entire process of institutional socialisation in the survey country, they should – at least in principle – be equipped with the necessary resources to participate fully and equally in those modern societies to which their parents immigrated. The fact that this is not the case in each and every domain studied … in this survey points to structural deficits which this research project would like to address.

The RTN is an enlargement of the original project with 12 doctoral students and two post-doctoral researchers coordinated by INED in Paris and supported by the TIES coordination team at the University of Amsterdam. Research groups in eleven countries work together, organize seminars and supervise and support the doctoral fellows.
