The project deals with the history of making modern science and scholarship autonomous in Habsburg Central Europe. In contrast to other scientific landscapes, modern 'Austrian' scholarship ran the risk of being taken into two diametrically opposed political projects: the concept of the "Staatsnation" and the "Kulturnation". This political constellation, which was connected with specific socio-cultural practices, became manifest in particular epistemologic solutions within the creative tensions of logical deduction and empirical induction, objectivism and subjectivism, universalism and particularism. This project will illuminate this unique development shown on the basis of significant developments in the scientific fields.
