This habilitation project links up with current discussions around the relationship between National Socialism and Modernism and opens up a new area of research in its focus on a particular intellectual undertaking. Between 1930 and 1960, several figures endeavoured to give knowledge and experience greater depth in a way that was modern and constructive in socio-political terms. In their attempt to recode deep knowledge, those involved in this other, deeper modernism (including Benjamin, Kracauer, Broch and Doderer) set themselves against ethnic and National Socialist discourses. Their aim was to reclaim depth for modernism.
