Remembering victims of the Holocaust in Austria and Bosnia and Herzegowina
The research project explores the life stories of Jews who had a connection with Bosnia and Herzegovina either before or during the Holocaust. Some of them were born there when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy but eventually settled in Vienna or Austria, from where they were deported to concentration and extermination camps. Others were Austrian Jews who fled to the former Yugoslavia and found temporary shelter in the cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina such as Brčko, Derventa, Čapljina and Mostar.
The research focus of this project is on the Holocaust as an integrated history since, as Saul Friedländer writes, "The history of the Holocaust is not only confined to German decision and actions. It is therefore necessary to recount an integrated history which also takes account of the Jewish perspective." In addition, a focus on transnational perspectives means that the Holocaust is researched as part of an “entangled history” of Central Europe.
