In March 1978 the Austrian Memorial Site at Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum was opened, and in keeping with the spirit of the 70’s, the historical view presented Austria as the “first victim” of the Nazi regime. 2006, a project group consisting of Brigitte Bailer, director of the Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance, Bertrand Perz, a professor at the Department of Contemporary History at the University of Vienna, and Heidemarie Uhl was formed, which was aimed to analyze the Austrian memorial and develop conceptual considerations for a redesign. In 2010 the implementation phase of the redesign project was started.
