An International Comparison of Heroes' Squares
Similar to memorials, street names refer to the political and cultural relationships dominant in cities at specific periods, and they serve to consolidate the public culture of memory. In Vienna, the application of persons’ names in the designation of public sites – streets and squares – throughout the city is a phenomenon set in the modern age (known as the ‘Ring Street Era’). The project puts the way these public sites in Vienna were named after scholars and scientists into context. The goal of this research is to analyze the selection process in view of changing political contexts and its function of constructing, negotiating and renegotiating identity in the public sphere.
