Honoring Tilmann Vetter: Mind-Only, Omniscience, and His Legacy

Book launch and lecture by Lambert Schmithausen

Monday 30.06.2025 05:06 pm

The Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press invite you to an evening of talks and a book launch to celebrate the publication of Tilmann Vetter’s “Studies on Indian Philosophy and Buddhism,” edited by Lambert Schmithausen and Jonathan A. Silk.

Tilmann Vetter, who earned his doctorate in Vienna in 1962, was Professor of Buddhist Studies at Leiden University from 1975 until retiring in 2000. His extensive work remains highly valuable, though his untimely death in 2012 left key projects unfinished. From Vetter’s files, Schmithausen and Silk have compiled this volume of his writings, which make new contributions to his fields of interest, help understanding his intellectual biography and provide further research stimuli. This evening in Vetter’s honor will feature a lecture by Schmithausen on the doctrine of mind-only, followed by a book launch including a shorter talk by Silk on the Buddha’s omniscience.
