IWF announces its anniversary year

The Graz Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences turns 50 years old

Exactly 50 years ago, the Austrian Parliament approved the federal budget for 1971, thus laying the foundation for the Space Research Institute (IWF) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

IWF will celebrate throughout the year 2021. A varied programme is in preparation, culminating in Mission Possible - a special exhibition at the Center of Science Activities of the Universalmuseum Joanneum.

From 09 April to 31 October 2021, the Steiermark Schau will span an arc that reaches far back into Styria's past and into its future. IWF will be part of the exhibition in the Folk Life Museum.

Things remain exciting around our space missions throughout the year. In February, Tianwen-1 will enter Mars orbit. Solar Orbiter will approach the Sun for the first time in the same month and will conduct its second gravity assist manoeuvre at Venus in August and at Earth in November. BepiColombo will visit Venus a second time in August and make its first Mercury flyby in October. The launch of NASA's CubeSat mission CUTE is scheduled for September 2021.

With this joyful look into the future, even a challenging year like 2020 can be concluded with confidence.

Further dates will be announced on the website. If you want to be added to our events mailing list, please contact pr.iwf(at)oeaw.ac.at.
