Their studies are those most read: the scientific studies of "highly cited researchers". Among the world's most cited researchers are 28 scientists who are researching at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) or are closely associated with the Academy as members either at home or abroad. The list comes from the current report of the US company Clarivate Analytics.

The report looks at how frequently publications of a researcher from a particular subject area – including science, medicine, economics and social sciences – were cited by peers in their publications. The citation frequency is, in addition to the number of publications in journals, a common comparative value for the scientific relevance of research work. To honor the work of researchers who have a strong influence in several scientific fields, the category "Cross-Field" for interdisciplinary work was added in 2018.

The ranking of the most productive and cited scientists is based on the citation database "Web of Science" and currently includes around 6,000 scientists worldwide from 22 research areas. From Austria, 44 people are among the internationally most cited researchers. Of these, 16 are members of the OeAW and 6 conduct research at OeAW institutes.

This number is particularly gratifying for the Academy and further evidence of the success of a long-standing, consistently pursued strategy of excellence. Indeed, although only 2% of all scientists working in Austria are employed by the OeAW, their proportion of the "highly cited researchers" is above average at 13%.
